Suba, Lower East Side--CLOSED
I first had dinner at Suba about a year ago and had a wonderful experience. So I was sad to find out this weekend would be their last. I went one last time Thursday night.
The design is half the reason I love this restaurant. It’s three floors: a street-level tapas bar, the “grotto” (a floating room completely surrounded by water) and the subterranean lounge. I love the contrast...

How Much Water Does Pasta Really Need? →
An interesting article from NYT Dining. Just by cutting back on the amount of water you use to boil pasta, the nation could save the equivalent of half a million gallons of oil a year. And it doesn’t affect taste!

Cookie of the Week: Le Petit Ecolier
Ed. Note: I love cookies—homemade, sandwiching ice cream, little store-bought biscuits—more than any other food. I always keep my cupboards stocked with at least one variety. I’m on a lifelong quest to find the ultimate cookie. Recommendations welcome and appreciated.
This week’s cookie makes me feel a little uncomfortable, but it’s so delicious I won’t let my...

Nolita House, NoLita
Nolita House is by far my favorite neighborhood brunch spot. It’s always my go-to place when guests are in town, and this weekend my sisters got the royal treatment.
We ordered a french toast for the table, and were disappointed to find out they’ve changed it. Before, I proclaimed it my favorite in the city; now I’ll do without.
But that’s okay, it’s already tough...

Birthday Surprise: Mercadito, East Village
I rang in my 25th year this weekend with a surprise party at Mercadito. Unfortunately I was so shocked with the surprise that I could hardly focus on tasting the food. But it was all beautiful, and the stand-out shrimp and mahi-mahi tacos were incredible. I can’t wait to go back under less excitable conditions!
Appropriately, we finished the meal off with Crumbs cupcakes. (Thanks Fuzz!)...

Spitzer's Corner, Lower East Side
Spitzer’s is quickly becoming my “go-to” spot on the Lower East Side. I love the casualness, the lack of pretension, the long communal tables, and the low lighting.
Although I wouldn’t chose the gastropub if i was looking for an incredible meal (each entree, while tasty, is served stand alone), it’s perfect when you want a casual bite, maybe sharing a main course and...

Lombardi's Pizza, NoLita
This past weekend, I decided to find out if always-packed Lombardi’s (America’s First Pizzeria!) is just a tourist trap, or if it actually serves respectable pizza.
To start, the menu is as basic as can be. Your choice of original margarita or white pizza, or a calzone. Sides include a couple salads and breadsticks. A basic menu is not necessarily a bad thing, if you can do those few...

Pursuing The Perfect Plate
Ed. Note: I am often asked for restaurant recommendations, so I’ve decided to compile my (hopefully helpful) advice and turn it into a little blog series. Enjoy!
Situation:
Date in the West Village: Drinks, followed by dinner (preferably Mexican)
Vibe:
“Cozy”
Suggestions:
One of my go-to spots for great margaritas in the West Village is La Palapa. Site of my annual birthday margarita, 2008....

Caffe Falai, NoLita
I walk past Caffe Falai’s unassuming little storefront almost daily and decided Monday was going to be the day I would give it a try. The space is small and intimate, and decorated in the style I would do my own apartment if I were rolling.
I tried to not let the ambiance overpower my opinion of the restaurant as I browsed the breakfast menu. Simple offerings include baked...
