March is national peanut month
I must get here!
magicmolly:
Peanut Butter & Co is a store on Sullivan near Bleecker Street. They sell peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that come with carrot sticks and taste best with a cream soda. The price scheme is offensive but a sandwich registers as both meal AND dessert, so it can be eaten without a veil of guilt. The decor is a cross between Leave it to Beaver and the Google...

'inoteca, Gramercy
In an area starved for some classy establishments, the new Gramery/Murray Hill ‘inoteca is a fantastic addition to the neighborhood, and it shows. By 7 on a Friday nite all of the tables in the dining room were full. At 8:30 there was a line. And the separated bar room was the liveliest little place I’ve seen in a long time, rocking from six until we left at eight thirty.
I tried the...

Vento, Meatpacking District--CLOSED
Vento is not one of my favorite restaurants. I don’t think it is outstanding. I do think they offer solid food at reasonable prices, especially for the neighborhood. And when summer finally arrives, they have one of the best patios in the city.
They’re offering some great recession specials right now, and at these prices, the place is definitely worth a visit. We took advantage of...

Candle Cafe, Upper East Side
When I moved to the city, my roommate at the time and now dear friend, Sara, introduced me to Candle Cafe. As Sara is a very healthy and particular eater, her favorite restaurant is vegan. I must admit, I was apprehensive when she suggested we try it.
Two and a half years later, Candle is now also one of my favorite restaurants. And coming from someone who isn’t a health nut OR a vegan,...

Boca Chica, East Village
Boca Chica is one of my favorite little finds in the city, although I don’t frequent it as much as I should. Maybe that will change now.
The kitschy cute restaurant serves up some of the best frozen margaritas in the city, specifically the passion fruit flavor. What’s more, each meal starts with a plate of delicious plantain chips and black bean dip—-not just some cheap factory...

Cookie of the Week: Old Faithful
Really, is there anything better than a warm chocolate chip cookie with a tall glass of ice-cold milk? With all those newfangled desserts out there, this might be the one sweet treat that will never go out of style.
While on my quest to find the best cookie in the world, I’m on a subquest to find the best chocolate chip cookie recipe. So this weekend I picked one of the countless notations...

Elizabeth, NoLita
This recession, great deals abound, even at restaurants! I took advantage of a recession special last nite at Elizabeth: $25 Monday prix fixe dinner, including appetizer, entree, and glass of wine or beer. I had a glass of wine ($13), endive salad ($12), and scallops ($24) for $25!! Half-off! The ambiance was great (minus the skull lamps at the entrance) and the food was delicious. Unfortunately I...
My McDonald's Shamrock Shake Journey: An Emotional... →
There are no Shamrock Shakes in New York? You’ve got to be kidding me. Shamrock Shakes and Girl Scout cookies are what spring is all about!
Serious disappointment.

A Weekend of Brunching: Spring Street Natural and...
Spring Street Natural’s challal french toast with fresh berries and a fresh-squeezed mango lemonade were the perfect accompaniments to Saturday’s 65 degree weather. More raves about SSN here and here.
Today was brunch at Jane, one of my favorite staples, especially now that I live in the neighborhood. This chicken chopped salad (corn, blue cheese, avocado, tomatoes, cucumbers, and...

Another Great Sandwich
This is one of my other “go-to’s” in the Midtown: Hale and Hearty’s Egg Salad Sandwich.
Not liking meat all that much (and mostly despising lunch meat), egg salad is an important part of my diet. H&H is the best I’ve found: not swimming in mayo, perfectly seasoned, and mixed with just the right veggies (thin slices of cucumber, diced tomatoes, and even a few...
Cookie of the Week: 'Nuff said.
PS: Yes, that’s this year’s new Dulce de Leche. I’ll report back.

A Great Sandwich
One topping I looooove on a sandwich is apple slices. But it’s so hard to pull off! They need to be crisp (obviously) and they need to be thin, so you don’t feel like you’re eating an apple wedge with some turkey on it. No no. And it can’t be accompanied by Brie (too over-powering), which 99.9% of sandwiches with apple slices are.
But relax, I found the perfect...

brunch at mi casa: sticky buns!
Today Fuzz and I decided to cook brunch at my apartment. We agreed we both wanted something savory (scrambled eggs with mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, and goat cheese) but also wanted something sweet and small to accompany it. After consulting my Barefoot Contessa cook book, sticky buns it was! We were quite pleased with our results. Here’s the recipe if you want to play along.
1. Mix...
