What I Found Wednesday: Ricky's Lucky Nuts
I normally think peanuts are pretty mediocre, but then a free-for-all bag of Ricky’s Lucky Nuts popped up in my work pantry, and my world has been rocked. These are hands down the best peanuts I’ve ever had. The Original variety has some sort of sweet, honey roasted coating, and the Bombay Curry Coconut is a spicy explosion of goodness. Great for a healthy afternoon snack.  Hoping I...

Osteria Morini, SoHo
Last week I finally got to dine at Osteria Morini, the new “casual” Michael White (of Marea fame) restaurant in SoHo. Never mind that it opened last fall; reservations are still difficult to come by. (Only 10:15 left on a Tuesday nite, a week out? Sheesh!) Lucky for us, the rain played in our favor and we were able to get a walk-in after a short wait. I’m always...

Rubirosa, NoLita
I’m always going to have something against Rubirosa, the recently-opened pizza joint serving up dependable (but not groundbreaking) Italian fare to hip young things in NoLita. (It replaced my favorite neighborhood restaurant, Lulu’.) The spin-off of Staten Island’s famous Joe & Pat’s (and managed by former Beatrice doorman Angelo Bianchi) packs a trendy/hipster crowd,...

Cafe Iberico, Chicago
Apparently Cafe Iberico is the place to be in Chicago. The gigantic restaurant was packed on a Wednesday nite, overflowing with what seemed to be mostly large groups. And for good reason—this is the perfect place for a party. The food is cheap (I swear I walked out of there stuffed and tipsy for around $20), the tapas menu fun for sharing, and the ambiance lively. The food is...

Big and Little's, Chicago
After a nite at D.O.C. Wine Bar, the next morning I needed hangover food stat. Luckily, my sister’s River North apartment is just down the street from Big and Little’s. This tiny hallway of a place (no tables, just counter stools) is serving up some deep fried magic. Yes, that is one giant hunk of fish, and—AND—the best truffle fries of your life. (So says everyone,...

D.O.C. Wine Bar, Chicago
D.O.C. is my new favorite place in Chicago, a place I’d definitely have regular status at if I lived there. Not only is the food fantastic (casual but superbly well done), but it’s in the uber awesome Lincoln Park neighborhood, right next door to a record store. It could not have been screaming my name any louder.  And the wine flights! Three very generous (nearly full) pours for...

What I Found Wednesday: Macro Vegetarian Thai...
These dumplings have been my healthy eating saving grace for quite some time now. Macro, vegan, whole wheat, stuffed with veggies, and fresh—what more could you want?! There’s about 15 dumplings in the $6 pack, which gives me three meals when I supplement it with sauteed spinach. Would be great with stir fried veggies, too. Look for them at Gourmet Garage. Check the website for...

Teany, Lower East Side
I’ve been dying to eat at Teany since forever, but something always got in the way. (Including the time two years ago when I showed up for dinner only to learn there was a fire there the nite before.) I’m a long-time fan of their Teanychino tea latte, but on Sunday I finally had a full feast. The tiny 9-year-old cafe (owned by Moby) is bright and calming, and the menu is...

The Best Veggie Dishes in NYC →
In case, like me, you missed this a couple months ago, here’s NYMag’s list of top veggie dishes. My favorite vegetarian haunt in the city (and one of my favorite restaurants, period), Candle Cafe, was wrongly left off. What are your favorite healthy restaurants/vegetarian dishes?

Locro de Zapallo (Acorn Squash Stew)
Well New Yorkers, sounds like we’re in for another snow storm this weekend. If you’re looking to hunker down with a hearty yet healthy meal, wherever you may be, I suggest this traditional South American vegetarian stew. It’s thick, warm, and flavorful—what more could you ask for? This recipe comes from Gerard at New York Vintners. Ingredients ¼ cup vegetable or olive...

What I Found Wednesday: Trader Joe's Pretzel Roll
If you’re a carb fiend like me, you’ll go nuts for Trader Joe’s pretzel loaf. It’s ultra squishy, and the salty pretzel outside perfectly contrasts the bread’s sweetness. It was gobbled up in a flash at our New Year’s feast. Great for cheese, dips, and even sandwiches!
