What I ate in Washington, DC
Besides a delicious Fourth of July picnic and half a dozen fluffy cupcakes, here’s where else I chowed down in our nation’s capital.

Cantina Marina. Pets and I started off the weekend with yummy margaritas and nachos. No tricks here, just your standard Mexican fare that always hits the spot at 5 o’clock. Bonus points for the cute location right on the water. Negative points for the flash flood that washed our nachos away.

Vinoteca. I love this little wine bar on U Street because it’s classy yet fun, the food is delish, and the service is fantastic. Here we had scallops with fava bean and fennel salad, potato-leak puree, and fennel-lemon vinaigrette, and tuna with chili mayo and portobello with hummus sliders.

Tackle Box. This casual restaurant in Georgetown served up the best fish tacos I’ve ever had in my life. It’s owned by the same people who do Hook next door, but the food here is a fraction of the price. I can’t wait to return! They’ve also apparently got the best blueberry pie in the city. I won’t miss it next time.

Zaytinya. This is one of my favorite restaurants in the world, and has been since I first went in 2004. Five years later, the Greek/Mediterranean tapas restaurant still has it. Small plates are served to share, and come with the best (and unlimited) puffy pita pockets. We had about eight small plates, but I was just too excited to document it all. Take my word for it, if you have time for just one dinner in DC, make it here. And it’s super affordable!

Belga Cafe. Belga is my favorite brunch place in the city. We had green eggs (fresh herbs, Belgian cheese, melted spinach, and herb pesto on a English muffin with bacon) and Liege waffles (a denser, sweeter, chewier waffle with a caramelized sugar coating) with caramelized apples and cinnamon. Holy cow. That waffle. Worth the trip to DC alone. Can’t wait to return!
